9ª entrevista: Susan

9ª entrevista a tejedores MyP

By Susan and Joao

Susan is from Denmark, a country with a long and strong knitting tradition. When she comes, the conversations go back and foward from English to Spanish, although Susan's communication skills in Spanish are improving fast. Susan's sweater and hats are lovely, mostly made with two stands of yarns. I was very fortunate when she patiently taught me a shawl pattern, in a very encouraging way.

When did you start to knit? Tell us about it...
Susan: I think I was 6 or 7, I started to knit for my dolls. My mom also knitted for my dolls, as well as for my brother and I. I started again in highschool, we were wearing big sweaters at that time. Then I knitted when my daughters were boarn. Now I've been knitting since they have left home and I have more time. This was with my work colleagues, from the school where I worked.

Why do you knit?
Susan: I knit because I get inspired by the colours. We have a very beautiful yarn shop at Copenhagen, Sommerfuglen. I followed some courses and it was very inspiring to visit this shop. This is one reason, The other one is that I relax, I like to create something, beautiful things.

What knid of yarns do you like to knit with?
Susan: Wool and mohair with silk. Sometimes I knit in cotton, I have knitted kitchen cloths in cotton.  But I think the result looks better in wool.

What is your favouvite knitting technique?
Susan: I like to knit top-bottom jumpers, and I also like raglan.

Where do you buy yarn?
Susan: In Copenhagen, in the Sommerfuglen yarn shop. It's a shop in the middle of Copenhagen, it has been there for 30 years. The ladies who work there knit like professionals, I think some of them have degrees in design. They teach courses, I have been in some basic courses, some years ago, last time I started knitting. This shop has shelves with lots of beautiful yarns and colors.

How would you describe your style as a knitter?
Susan: Simple and classic!

What are knitting now? Who is it for?
Susan: A jumper for myself. The yarns are silk mohair and alpaca, from Isager, and the pattern Luksus sweater by Sanne Fjalland. I have recently knitted  for my daughters, but I usually knit more for myself. I have been knitting for them since I have been in Spain.

A special thing you have knitted...
Susan: A shawl with mohair. I really like my long cardigans, I have knitted 3 or 4 of them.

And to finish up, about the MyP meetings: how long have you been comming? Why do you come back?
Susan: Since summer 2018. I like the women, I like to get inspired by their work. And I try to understand the Spanish!
